Meran in the holiday region Meran and surroundings in South Tyrol

| The Pearl of the Alps

Meran (Italian Name: Merano) is South Tyrol’s second largest city, after South Tyrol’s capital Bozen. The city is located in a basin where the valleys of Passeiertal, of Vinschgau and of Ultental meet each other, surrounded by high mountains (1500–3335 m). Meran is known since the 19th century first of all as a health resort.
The city of Meran is subdivided in six fractions: Gratsch, Obermais, Untermais, Labers, Sinich and Meran itself (often named as “The Old City”).

Meran owns a very long touristy history. It is considered as one of the first tourism centres of the Habsburg empire. Hence Meran was visited already by a large number of renowned tourists of culture and politics. Scientifics and medics from all over the world appreciated chiefly Meran’s mild and Mediterranean climate and the pure healing air. After 1945 Meran anew became one of South Tyrol’s most important touristy places – and that didn’t change since today.
